| Well hell, I figure this thing (I sometimes forget about it) is, first and foremost a place for self-love. So I'll put up my column in the school paper regularly here so I can marvel at myself and keep a digital copy safe from harddrive failure. It's a music review column (claro que si)...
Howe Gelb – ‘Sno Angel like You Thrill Jockey Records Released March 2006
Joy seems to be missing in a lot of music today, and no one's doing anything about it, at least that's what I thought. When Giant Sand front-man/Arizona eccentric Howe Gelb approached the director of the gospel choir Voices of Praise to ask if he could record an album with them, the director said, “Sure, just keep it positive.” So he did.
‘Sno Angel Like You is startling in just how happy it sounds. The tracks, most of which feature only Gelb’s dry, Lou Reed-like vocals, the choir for choruses, a muted electric guitar or two, and maybe some drums, are sparse but at the same time filled with warmth, like you’re sitting next Gelb and the choir as they’re play the songs they wrote for you. Standout tracks like ‘But I Did Not,’ ‘Howlin’ a Gale,’ and the (late) Rainer Ptacek penned ‘Worried Spirits’ work so well with the choir because Gelb sets down a musical structure that’s designed to accentuate their joyous and spirited vocals. Make no mistake, the lyrical themes are not tied directly to religion, but none of these songs would be the same without that Southern Baptist-type of exuberance each just exudes. It’s amazing to see an artist put out one of his best and most original works nearly two decades into his career, and I applaud Howe Gelb for doing so.

| Oh yeah. I got a promotion. You can now call me Steven Butler, MD. Because I'm the music director of a pretty big college radio station. So basically I get about 10 CDs in the mail a day, throw away 8 of them, and then get calls from promoters and members of those bands asking me to get them plays at a radio station. They send me concert tickets and posters and stickers and such. Sometimes candy.

| I checked my email slightly after midnight on my birthday, which happens to be today, and received a rather nice present from a person I've never met. Professor John Crespi informed me that from January '07 to May '07, I will be studying in the following three places:

You could say I'm excited.

| Lordy lordy I'm quite bored-y. Bored enough to open this thing up.
I pine for the fjords...never thought I'd miss a place that cold, but I'm entertained every waking second, especially by the almighty JamesLo. I doubt I could've made a better decision about college, it's amazing up there.
Honestly, the next summer may be my last full one in SC. I'll work at camp again to make some dinero, but I'll just intern on campus the following summer, make 3 times the money, and get work toward my major done. Plus I'll get to experience how weird Hamilton really is (the upperclassmen tell me stories).
Two possibilities for next year, and both just may happen:
1) I will be running WRCU, the radio station, because I give a damn 2) I will be studying in Bei Jing Da Xue for the second semester
Now I just need a major...
-Steven
